A mandrake is the root of a plant, historically derived either from plants of the genus Mandragora found in the Mediterranean region.
Because mandrakes contain deliriant hallucinogenic tropane alkaloids and the shape of their roots often resembles human figures, they have been associated with magic rituals throughout history, including present day contemporary pagan traditions such as Wicca and Odinism.
Mandrakes were often made into amulets which were believed to bring good fortune, cure sterility, etc. In one superstition, people who pull up this root will be condemned to hell, and the mandrake root would scream and cry as it was pulled from the ground, killing anyone who heard it.
This specimen of cursed mandragora is displayed in its decorated and aged shadow box frame on a cloth surface. You can appreciate its characteristic features, its roots and the stem of the plant from which it has been pulled to extract it from the ground.
All the pieces of this work are artificial and handmade.
It’s a perfect creepy display for your desk or book shelf. A great conversation piece for your office or library. Amazing addition to your Cabinet of Curiosities!
The wooden frame measures 23cm (9 inches) tall, 17cm (6.6 inches) wide and 3cm (1.1 inches) deep.
